Perspectives Defined in Analysis Cube not working in Report Builder

I have created a simple cube in BI Studio against an Oracle Relational Data Warehouse. In this cube I have created a perspective in which I have selected (included) only a small subset of measures and dimension. When I view this perspective on the Browse Tab of BI Studio, only the entities that were included in the perspective were available for report construction as was expected.

Next, I generated a model for this cube in Report Manager. Now here is the problem, I then opended the model in Report Builder and selected the same perspective from above, but all of the Entities in the cube were displayed including the fields I explicitely did not include in the perspective. I then looked at the .smdl file describing the Model and it looked like in the Perspective description section all of the cube's entities were included, even the ones that should not have been included. It seems as if the problem is ocurring durring the model generation. I also tried generating the model in Management Studio and it seems to be doing the same thing.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Could I be doing something wrong(probably)? I have to give a presentation soon and this is a big deal for the Project Stakeholders.

By the way, I am using the 180 Day Evaluation of Sql Server 2005 with SP2 CTP installed.

Help!!!!

Certainly the perspective in the Report Model should reflect the definition in the cube.

Does this apply to all the perspectives in the cube, if you define multiple of them?

|||Sorry for my delayed response. The answer to your question is yes, my previous message applied to all of the perspectives in the cube. And I have had the same problem on multiple cubes.|||I have the same problem. You already know a solution?

Persistent BI Studio Crashes

I am wondering if anyone has experienced the same persistent BI Studio crashes that I have. I can get the BI Studio to crash by simply opening a report and toggling back and forth on the Data/Layout/Preview tabs.

Here are the steps:

Launch BI Studio
Open Solution
Open Report in designer (layout tab defaulted)
Click Preview tab, then View Report button
Toggle tab to Layout, then Data, then back to Layout, then Preview

Boom...Visual Studio throws an exception and I lose all changes.

It happened about 20 times yesterday.

I have a solution with one Analysis Services project and one Reporting Services project. Should I keep my solutions to one project?

Am I on a stable version of the software?

Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
Version 8.0.50727.42 (RTM.050727-4200)
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0.50727

Installed Edition: IDE Standard

SQL Server Analysis Services
Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services Designer
Version 9.00.1399.00

SQL Server Integration Services
Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services Designer
Version 9.00.1399.00

SQL Server Reporting Services
Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services Designers
Version 9.00.1399.00

Any clues would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I am not seeing that, but did you create the report in the report wizard, or by hand?

I am having similar problems when I use the wizard to create a report.

I have been getting this. I now have a erport that is just 1 table, based on a dataset which is getting data from the sysdtslog90 table.

When ever I go to preview BI studio crashes.

permissions problems creating a linked server

I am trying to create a linked server in the management studio and am getting an error

"A required operation could not be completed. You must be a member of the sysadmin role to perform this operation"

I have tried giving the user rights via

GRANT ALTER ANY LINKED SERVER TO [DOM\user]

as well as adding them to the setupadmin group. No luck.

I can add the linked server via sp_addlinkedserver as the user.

Any ideas? After searching some more I came across this.

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa560998.aspx

Which states you must be a member of the sysadmin role to create a linked server to do this via the management tools. Any idea why?

When I script the GUI all of the SP's it calls are available to logins with the setupadmin role or who have been granted access to alter any linked server.

Permissions on stored procedures

Using Server Management Studio Express and SQL Server 2005 Express - is it possible to assign Exec permissions for users on a sproc by sproc basis. If so, how do I do this?

TIA

--
Mike BrindOk - I've found out how to do it. Just run a GRANT command in the Query Pane on the chosen procedure for the selected user.

Permissions on a new stored procedure

Help!

I usually use SQL 2000 at work but upon deciding to work from home have installed and setup SQL express 2005. I use the management studio to write table and sps but for new sp I cannot find how to allow permission. I have been able to allow permission for all sps on the database I restored that I am now working on and have successfully allocated permissions to a new table but cannot do the same with the sp. The sp is viewable in the database but permission is denied when attempting to execute via my ASP script.

Any ideas?

Error Type:
Microsoft SQL Native Client (0x80040E09)
EXECUTE permission denied on object 'procBannerSlotList', database 'HotLizardWebsite', schema 'dbo'.

It seems after all this time I've managed to work it out for myself - so for anyone out there not aware of the solution - the solution is this:

In the database security - right click the role you wish permissions to be set for. Go to the Securables section, click Add and just add all objects belonging to dbo - I then just removed the dt prefixed objects that were not relevant - sp permissions now fully operational

Permissions Not Visible - SQL 2005 Management Studio

I'm trying to apply some security to my database, so i've created a role, added my user to the role and then set the security rights for the role. Everything work great, the security right behave exactly as defined...
However, when I go back the the Permissions pages, the values that i've already set don't appear in the lists (the all still work). In Fact they don't show up anywhere either in the permissions for the table / sp concerned or the right for the user or role.
Is it just me, or is it a problem with SQL 2005 Management Studio? or can anybody suggest a way of finding the securty rights of any given database object?

Security in SQL Server 2005 is Schema based, try these articles to get started. Hope this helps.

This has got me completely confused !!!!
In my simple world...
I would create a database role and the give this role the required rights to my database objects i.e the tables (select, insert update etc), stored procedures (execute etc). I would then create user accounts and add them to the required database roles...
CREATE ROLE [MyDB_AccessRole]
...Table def's...
GRANT SELECT ON [dbo].[MyTable] TO [MyDB_AccessRole] ..etc
...SP defs ...
GRANT EXECUTE ON [dbo].[MySP] TO [MyDB_AccessRole] ..etc
CREATE USER [DBUser] FOR LOGIN [DBUser]
EXEC sp_addrolemember N'MyDB_AccessRole, N'DBUser'

So far so good... this still all works in SQL 2005 (althought it nevers shows the rights anywhere?)
Then we have schemas...
CREATE SCHEMA [MyDB_AccessSchema] AUTHORIZATION [MyDB_AccessRole] ?

Is is true that the schema is just like the role? (i.e. A collection of database objects and permissions) if so, why do we need both.
Has anybody any simple examples (for dummies like me) that would explain the different between a role and a schema.
Having tried to create a role, I stiil don;t seem to be able to see the rights the user, role or schema has.

Permissions Issue Logging into Mgt Studio

I am unable to log into SSRS from Mgt Studio and receive a permissions error when I go to http://ServerName/reportserver in IE. When loging into Mgt Studio I've entered the following for the server name:

ServerName
ServerName\Insance
http://ServerName/reportserver

The first two methods return an error "server cannot be found". The third allows me to login but when I click on "Home" I receive:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum)
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The permissions granted to user 'mydomain\myAccount' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied) (Report Services SOAP Proxy Source)
The permissions granted to user 'mydomain\myAccount' are insufficient for performing this operation. (rsAccessDenied) (ReportingServicesLibrary)

******************************************
I am a member of the dcom and power users group. Does anyone know what is causing this and how to resolve?

thanks in advance,
ScottSounds like you haven't set the correct permissions ;)
Goto http://localhost/reports as a local-administrator then on root -> properties and add a new role for mydomain\myAccount..
For testing you could add "Everyone" as a content-manager and then reduce the rights until they fit for your case..

Permissions granted from Domain credentials

I am working with Visual Studio.net and creating a front end for a SQL datab
ase. Now with the access front end, it uses the domain credentials of the l
ogged in user to determine what permissions they have for editing records in
the SQL (2000) database.
I need the same to be done with the web front end I am creating now. I have
gone into the WEB.CONFIG file and put in my credentials there, identity i
mpersonate="true" userName="domain\johndoe" password="password"
Now this is ok if...I didn't change my password regularly and I wanted every
one to have full access...but obviously I don't. Is there some syntax that
I need there so that it will use the credentials of the logged in user? Or a
m I in the wrong file and s
hould be making changes elsewhere? I am new to this but I am learning. In
the OleDB connection for the datagrid on the page, I have added the line...
Trusted Connection=SSPI. What am I missing? I am using OleDb connection a
nd OleDb Command. Like I s
aid...with my credential in the web.config, it works fine. But that is only
good for now. I need the security set so when I get to creating a page tha
t only administrators have access to I can get those to work correctly.
Thanks All!!I am assuming that with the Trusted Connection = SSPI the connection is
failing. If so, what error message do you get when it fails?

Try granting permissions on \root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ReportServer\v9 namespace to Everyone.

As a workaround you can type in the url to report server instead of machine name. This will cause management studio to not go through the WMI code path to resolve report server url.

http://<servername>/reportserver for the server name in

Management Studio and is able to connect to Reporting Services.

Permission to access dB problem in SQL Server 2005 Express from inside VS2005

I am trying to program a database from inside C++.NET via Visual
Studio 2005 using the ADO.NET set of classes, but this I believe is a
SQL Server 2005 Express permissions question under Windows XP
Professional OS.
In another thread, http://tinyurl.com/373lzx, I was able to open a
database successfully using VS2005 (thanks to a suggestion by Erland
Sommarskog). But subsequent to this I played around with the local
policy permissons while logged in as Administrator and may have
blocked access to this database. How to undo this? (I forgot what I
changed, but at the time it was pretty innocuous, and none of my other
programs have been affected).
Two problems really:
0/ though I can create and access a new database as a Power User, I
cannot access the old database anymore. Literally I have a red 'x'
next to the icon for the old database, and I get the error, under the
Server Explorer of Visual Studio 2005, when I right click "refresh" of
"Exception of the type 'System.Exception' was thrown".
1/ Switching to Administrator is no help (see below for the error),
but that also raises another question (see Q2 below)
2/ I played around with SQL Server 2005 Express Manager, and tried
adding various groups, but to no avail.
Question #1: how to undo this
Question #2: how to add "Admin" as an "object" or whatever you call
it under the SQL Server 2005 Express manager so I avoid the below
error (i.e., so Admin can access this dB).
Thank you.

Thanks but I was thinking of a less extreme fix.
I'm thinking there must be some way of 'unlocking' the old database.
The reason is, I figured out a workaround, in that I constructed the
same database from scratch, from inside of VS 2005 (i.e. mechanically
reconstructing the entire database), and the new, identical database
can now be accessed as before, from inside VS 2005, and the connection
works (refresh works, 'test connection' from Modify also works, and
the program accessing the new database). But the old database still
has a red "X" next to it, and refreshing does not work.
Just a weird aspect.
I've ordered some books on dB programming and maybe they'll have some
insight, but in general I'd like to know how to reset permissions and/
or fix such problems in the future (short of reconstructing the
database 'from scratch' as I did here)
