PF numbers

Hello!
I am puzzled by PF Usage numbers reported on our SQL server. It is SQL
Server 2000 (SP3a) running on Windows 2003 Enterprise Server with 12 GB of
RAM. SQL Server is restricted to 10GB. There is only one page file 2046MB.
When I open Task Manager PF Usage numbers are 10.3 GB. I am not sure how
this number is calculated. According to help : It is 'The amount of paging
file being used by the system.' Considering I have paging file 2GB big how
come Task Manager shows 10.3 GB?
Thanks you in advance,
Igor
Hi
Have you checked that the Page File is not also on other discs?
What does performance monitor show for this?

personal edition then move to enterprise

Hello,

Could i start work with personal edition then move all data to
enterprise edition ? i've to design and code on workgroup environment
then implement to windows server 2003. Do i just cut & paste data ?

TIA

PongYou can develop on Personal Ed then backup and restore to Enterprise or
you can develop TSQL scripts to build the database and load the data
from scratch.

Another option for development and testing is Developer Edition, which
MS prices at $50. Developer is functionally equivalent to Enterprise,
which means it comes without the constraints on capacity, features and
performance of Personal Ed.

Personal edition license if you have SQLServer enterprise

Hi,
I was under the impression that is you purchased a
SQLserver enterprise license then SQLserver personal
edition could be installed without a license.
Is that correct?
MikeAs I understand it:
It can be installed if you have a valid client license. As always, ask MS if you aren't sure:
You can call 1-800-426-9400 (select option 4), Monday through Friday, 6:00
A.M. to 6:00 P.M. (PST) to speak directly to a Microsoft licensing
specialist for licensing problem. Worldwide customers can use the Guide to
Worldwide Microsoft Licensing Sites
http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/index/worldwide.asp to find contact
information in their locations.

Personal Edition

I currently have a copy of SQL Server Enterprise Edition through MSDN
subscriptions. Everything I have read indicates that there should be a
Personal Edition of SQL Server on the same disk. I do not see this option
during the installation. I have also searched the individual files on the
disk with no success. Does anybody know where these files are located?I'm not totally sure but I think that the Personal Edition got installed
when you try to install the Standard Edition on an operating system which is
not a server edition, like WinXP.
Maybe it's the same thing with the Enterprise Edition but if you wan to play
the enterprise features like materialized views on a workstation, then you
should install the Developer Edition instead.

Permissions not applied

Hi everyone,
I'm facing a weird problem trying to set permissions on a column in Sql
Server 2000. When using Enterprise Manager the permission on some columns
don't get applied, that is setting Select permissions on Column1, Column2 an
d
Column3 only saves the permission on Column1 and Column2 but not on Column3.
I tried setting the permissions with a GRANT script in the Query Analyzer,
but still without any luck.
Service Pack 4 has been applied to SQL Server 2000.
Has anyone had the same type of troubles setting permissions on columns?
TIA,

Would it be possible for your to post the CREATE TABLE statement for
the table, and the GRANT statements you are using?
It would also be interesting to know how you conclude that the
permission is not applied.

thank you both for trying to solve my problems... :-)
The table consists of more than 350 columns, which may be the cause. I don't
know, really. As a solution I created a view on a subset of the columns
instead, in which I've managed to set the permissions.
So problem solved or at least avoided...

Permissions grants, denies don't take effect

Hi,

I'm trying to grant/deny object permissions in a user database using Enterprise Manager and query tool without success (for ‘public’ role and individual sql logins). I’m not getting any error messages. Permission changes just don’t take effect. Although, there are few objects, which already have permissions granted and I'm able to change permissions for these ones.

How can I change the permissions?

you might have a granted permission on a GUEST account

or an NT domain group. please check.

thats why denying wont work

|||there is no permissions granted or denied for the 'guest' account. I don't use domain groups.|||

What are the actual denies that you are trying to set. Did you verify that they appear in the system catalog (server_permissions, database_permissions)? Have you tried applying the denies using TSQL: DENY?

Thanks
Laurentiu

Permissions for SSAS Service Account?

Hi All,

Please help with this.

I'm running a server with Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition.

On the box I've performed one named instance installation of SSAS.

I've installed SP1 as well.

There's no firewall running on the machine.

My domain account is in the SSAS Server role.

SSAS Service is running according to SQL Configuration Manager

SQL Browser Service is running according to SQL Configuration Manager

If I run both SSAS and SQL Browser under Local System, everything works OK. But this is not the way I want it, because it's not safe and SSAS is unable to read data from the remote SQL box.

If I change the service account to a domain user account, I can't connect to SSAs anymore. The error message is:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

A connection cannot be made to redirector. Ensure that 'SQL Browser' service is running. (Microsoft.AnalysisServices.AdomdClient)

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it (System)

BUTTONS:

OK

I've both set the logon account at setup, using SQL Config Mgr and Service Manager.

Using PortQry I can see nothing's listening on port 2382.

It should work. I'm beginning to think this user account doesn't have sufficient rights.

So I've created two local accounts and used these as service accounts. Same thing, untill I added both accounts to the local administrators group, then everything worked fine again.

What am I doing wrong here? Your suggestions are much appreciated.

Thanks,

Coen

Hello. You have another configuration that you do not mention: "Surface area"

You will have to allow remote connections in this configuration tool. That is for each SQL Server 2005 service that you are using.

Couple of things.

One. Make sure you use SQL Configuration Manager to change serivce logon account for both SQL Browser and for Analysis Server.

I am using the SQL Config Mgr to change the user id's. BTW this is sometimes a bit crooked, and I still need to change the Service Account in the Service Manager as well.

Besides, I don't really think the problem's in there. Setup should set the correct permissions for the Logon Account.

Permissions for EM

What permissions are needed to utilize Enterprise Manager?
Long story, but public role has all rights revoked, so I want to create a
new database role that has access to what it needs to get into the EM.As long as the user has server login priviliges, they 'should' be able to
use EM. And they will have access to any object with public
permissions -including any other db on the server that allows public access.
(Northwind and Pubs are allow Public access to everything, so they should be
removed from production servers.)
Then to access a specific db, they need to be provided access to the db, and
put in the desired role.

Permissions for Domain user account

Hi,
I want to use a domain user account not belonging to local admin or domain admin groups in SQL 2000/2005 Enterprise edition. This is what I've done so far..
On the machine that is the Domain Controller:
- installed SQL 2005 as a domain admin

- created a domain user account using Active Directory Users and Computers. This user is only

"Member of" domain users; not any Administrators group.

- added this user to SQL Server Management Studio->Logins and in Server Roles assigned

sysadmin role.
Question 1: Do I need to give any additional permissions to this user to work with SQL?
Question 2: How can I test this user for basic SQL operations like database creation? Can I use Osql?
Question 3: Can I use this user account to login to my domain controller using remote desktop? I tried adding this user to remote users, but in vain.

Thanks!

Hi there,

Just a few of my thoughts....

Question 1: Do I need to give any additional permissions to this user to work with SQL?

Well, going off what you have said (making the domain user part of the sysadmin server role) this will allow the domain user to do any action on your database server.

Whether this is a good thing or not is debatable as it's pretty good practice to only give a user the lowest level of permissions they need in order to do whatever work they need to do. Not knowing your exact situation, giving the domain user the level of privilege you have might be overkill - but like I said it depends on what you're intending etc.

I would recommend you review security topics in SQL Server Books Online and use the info there in conjunction with your knowledge of the circumstances to select the appropriate strategy for giving permission to this user and any other users whose accounts you need to add.

Question 2: How can I test this user for basic SQL operations like database creation? Can I use Osql?

There are a few options here, I'll go into a few....

A) Yes you can use the OSQL or iSQL command line utilities to execute T-SQL if you're working with SQL Server 2000. Once again, SQL Server Books Online is a good resource for this.

If you're working with SQL Server 2005, it's better to use sqlcmd if you're looking to do things via a command line (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms170207(SQL.90).aspx)

B) It's easier to use graphical tools, I think. If you can use something like Query Analyzer (SQL Server 2000) or Management Studio (SQL Server 2005) to connect to your DB as the domain user (e.g. logging onto a machine with those tools installed as the domain user and then using those tools to connect to your database server) then that would probably be easier

Question 3: Can I use this user account to login to my domain controller using remote desktop? I tried adding this user to remote users, but in vain.

From what you've written it seems like you're doing the right thing. Here's a tutorial on the complete process which may help: http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_tutorials/Windows_2003_Terminal_Services_Part1.html
(Note that it's split into two parts...The link I've included is to the first part but the first part connects to the second part via another link)

TechNet isn't bad either: http://technet2.microsoft.com/windowsserver/en/technologies/featured/termserv/default.mspx

Like I said, from what you've written it's a little hard to gauge the exact problem but it seems like you're doing the right things. However, if you want to run through the steps in the articles & stuff I've placed links to above then things should work for your Terminal Services setup (they did for me)

Hope this helps a bit

Thanks alot for your help. Sorry for a delayed reply as I was reading the material you suggested and the good news is that I am able to implement the same and have got things working.
ref - Question 1: As for the permissions, as you suggested, I no longer give the user sysadmin role. The user has dbowner role and it suffices.
ref-Question 2: I used Query Analyser itself by logging in to the machine as the domain user.
ref- Question 3: I could not get Remote Desktop to work for the user. I guess some licensing issue. As a workaround, I used VNC to login as the domain user.

Thanks again.

Permission editor?

Hi,
I wonder is there a tool for easy setting of custom permissions for user on
database. When i try to do this via the Enterprise Manager it shows all the
objects in the DB without any grouping so it's difficult set permissions.
For example if i want to give SELECT permissions on all tables but not to
give SELECT on the VIEWS and i want to give EXECUTE permission on all
functions i must go around the list and put check-s on the boxes manually.
Thanks in advance

I suggest you script your tasks instead of performing them from Enterprise
Manager. Take a look at

some useful examples.
